We entered "Hungaria" from the East, starting our visit in the town of Koszeg. This was a charming medieval town with castle walls, a town square, several churches and lots of good wine. Just as you would hope from any central European town! From here we made a day trip to Fertod to see a palace.
Next we went to the city of Kecskemet in the middle of the Great Plain. The city is relatively modern with many of the central buildings dating back about 100 years. These are mostly built in a style known as "Hungarian Eclectic". We made a day trip to a national park where we saw traditional horsemanship - such as riding five horses at once. We then travelled further East into the Great Plain to a town called Hortobagy.
We then went to Eger. This was a charming town with a castle on the hill. The town was famous for its wine known as "Bull's blood". We went wine tasting in the "Valley of the Beautiful Women" which is where the wine is traditionally made.
Finally we went to Budapest. Our friend Martin flew in, and we spent several days catching up on old times while enjoying the Budapest tradition of cafes, bars, and restaurants.
